Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Teamwork, and Sport Psychology
with Bradley Browne, MBA and Jason Kaufman, PhD
“...tiny acts of service to your fellow cadets—a single stitch and another and another, until you have devoted yourself to something greater than you ever imagined, a tapestry that is Starfleet.”
In this episode of Movie House Sport Psychology, I'm joined by fellow Trekkies and the hosts of Dice in Mind, Bradley Browne, MBA, and Jason Kaufman, PhD, to discuss the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
We were all surprised by how much we enjoyed the series. Along the way, we tackle important questions—like whether Holly Hunter and Helen Hunt are actually the same person (they're not). We also discuss some of our favorite characters, including Jay-Den Kraag and Lura Thok, and speculate about the mystery surrounding The Sisko.
About This Episode
Beyond the action and humor, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy explores what it means to become part of something bigger than yourself.
In this conversation, we discuss how the cadets develop trust and team cohesion through increasingly difficult challenges, why mentorship is essential for developing future leaders, and how creativity, theater, and improv
can help people heal from emotional wounds and become
more resilient under pressure.
We also examine how the Academy creates opportunities for young leaders to make mistakes, learn from one another, and discover their strengths. Whether you're an athlete, coach, leader, educator, or lifelong Star Trek fan, the series offers thoughtful lessons about resilience, belonging, and learning to work as a team.
As Jay-Den reminds us:
"A warrior does not let a friend face danger alone."
